The weekend passes. Then a week. Then another week.

Leila and I don’t talk. She avoids me like I have the bird flu. I haven’t even spoken to Elijah since I kissed him. I keep hoping if she sees I’m avoiding him, she’ll realize he means nothing to me. But so far, it doesn’t matter what I do; I’m permanently etched on the bad friend list.

Captain meetings are the worst. I’m stuck in a room with Carter, Quinn, Ana, Leila, and Violet, and I don’t even have Sadie there for moral support. I only talk to Carter about team stuff, and we keep it as short as possible. Carter and Quinn aren’t opposed to PDA. I swear they try to display their affection whenever I’m around.

It’s awkward.

And gross

And gives me a twinge of jealousy.

Which irritates me.

Even though I’m reluctant, I start to talk about Grace with Dr. Blair. I hadn’t realized how angry I am or how much guilt I feel that I get to continue with my life while Grace is gone forever.

“What advice would Grace give you?” Dr. Blair asks.

“To be happy.” I sniffle, fighting off tears. “That’s why it sucks so much. She was such a happy, positive person. Such a kind-hearted person. She didn’t deserve the life she got.”

“That’s true. But you didn’t cause it. Nothing about it was your fault.”

I cry as some of the guilt I’ve felt is lifted from me.

During our sessions, Dr. Blair helps me realize that what I’m feeling is normal. I carefully leave out the part about Nolan and the creepy woman. Something tells me she wouldn’t say they are normal.

I meet Nolan every day at lunch and sometimes in the evenings. When he’s there, that is. The counselors don’t monitor the edge of the forest, making it easy to sneak away. At least one thing is going right for me.

Sadie doesn’t hang out with anyone but me, so I feel guilty leaving her by herself too much. But she insists that she enjoys reading time and never asks me where I go.

To my relief, the ghost woman has disappeared since the bonfire. Maybe she found someone else to haunt.

Arts and Crafts has turned out to be the best station I picked. No Carter, Elijah, Quinn, or Leila. Which means no drama. It’s just Sadie and me and our art supplies. This week we work on stippling. We create a picture one dot at a time. Literally. The whole picture consists of tiny dots. Press the pen down, pick the pen up. Over and over. Not for the impatient but it's cathartic.

Sadie meticulously pokes her pen to the page. She stipples a mama bear and baby bear, each holding a piece of bamboo. Each dot placed exactly where it should be. She even adds shading and other small details.

Me, not so much. My rose looks more like the scribbles of a three-year-old than a flower. It doesn’t help that my mind is in the forest with Nolan. We’ve only known each other a few weeks, but it feels like we’ve been friends much longer.
